Bookwalter Winery: August Shipment

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Some Columbia Valley goodness from Bookwalter Winery, heading up north for this month’s delish shipment!

Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Mamacork: “Needs to open up, I get leather, blackberry, woody, rosemary? Not as much fruit as I like, but I bet it will age well.”
Mysterymama:
“Very light nose, Flavor has some cedar, full but simple flavor, a little boozy but the alcohol seems to fade as the wine opens. This is a nice simple wine that would work well with strong cheese or dark chocolate.”
Mamacents: “Cab’s should be bold, but this one is young with a lot of potential… kind of like MAMATEASE! Bonanza (the cat) is purring over this one…”
Ladycork: “Fruits hide behind the acidity on this one. It is young and spirited, but does it have the legs to make it to graduation? Sharp, fruity with no tannins - I usually like a much heavier cab.”
Moxiemama: “Eldest in it’s class, mature but not confident. Needs fresh air - otherwise it will get too comfortable and watch bad reality shows. Decant friends and you will enjoy.”

Overall Mama Score = 3.3

Columbia Valley Merlot 2005

Mamacork: “Earth, rough, dry, berry, plum. Doesn’t taste like your typical merlot.”
Mysterymama: “Nose has sulfur. Flavor has plum essence, tart, medium tannins, jumpy - flavor shifts but not in a cohesive way. This wine is a little confused but could find some balance with the right food… like semi-hearty lighter meats.”
Mamacents: “First impression is that this is not your typical Merlot, nor is the winery label, which I love. (mamacork says check out the cool website) This is a heavy wine, you may want to decant it for a bit.”
Ladycork: “Get plums with a bit of earth. Suggest letting it open for a bit to let the petrol blow off. Full-bodied and big if you like that sort of thing, for the right gal this wine will please. Fills the mouth, but this baby needs to sit. At this price point, a little disappointed.”
Moxiemama: “Oak forest with a bit of earth and tobacco. Aged, but not traditional. Relaxed, calm, home with a sweater and a log fire. I call this is a ‘hot tub’ wine… it can be both relaxing AND stimulating.”

Overall Mama Score = 3.4

Columbia Valley Stillwater Creek Chardonnay-Viognier 2006

Mamacork: “This had a chard nose, get a little apricot and peach but the body and finish are flat. Little bit of fizzy characteristic.”
Mysterymama: “Nose has a hint of cedar and a touch of berry. The flavor is a bit effervescent, melon/old cantaloupe, tangy, clean finish. Good for a hot day, picnic, lobster boil.”
Mamacents: “Fruity nose. Not a chard fan, but the viognier blended with it makes it light and crisp. Some hint of apple or peach. This is a good wine to drink at Dolores Park on a Sunday fun-day.”
Ladycork: “Nose is honeysuckle and grapefruit with a bit of simple syrup and orchard-in-bloom. More citrus could make me swoon… Good price point. Pair with 7-up and slap on Charlie’s Angels.”
Moxiemama: “Peachy and un-ripe cantaloupe. Reminds me of a fruit salad that is a bit too much. Slightly fizzy and a little too excited. Like a karaoke song with someone wearing lime green shorts and fluorescent flip-flops.”
Snapmama: “Has a light appearance, but a slightly more predominant nose. It smells sugary and somewhat floral, which leads one to predict a strong sweet flavor, yet the palate is light a crisp with an acidic bite that got me right in the middle of the tongue. I would say this is a food wine, meant to be paired with some heavier cheeses, or creamy summer squash soup. Good afternoon sipper for a picnic…”
Mamabear: “Lofty ride on the palate! Light, sweet, honeysuckle nose with tropical fruit, seems to announce a delicate wine, but no! Substantial body makes it a food wine. The viognier gives it good mouthfeel and absence of oak allows the fruit to shine. Drink with seafood or even figs and parmasean cheese. An unusual wine for the adventurous.”

Brooks Winery: July Shipment

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Straight from Willamette, Oregon, we LOVE these Brooks Wines.

Amycas 2005
Mamacork- “I taste the pinot gris. Pretty dry, which I like. Makes me think of barefoot prancing in a field of grapevines on a hot summer night.”
Mysterymama- “Nose: plum, wet leaves. Flavor: plum, tart, velvety texture, clean, slightly dry finish, melon. Warm summer evening, beach bonfire, stern grove.”
Mamacents- “Not as sweet as I expected given the blend of grapes. It has a great finish. Must drink at the beach in a sarong and flip flops.”
Ladycork- “The ultimate blend. Dry and also sweet. Nice smooth finish. Excellent for a summer eve of figs and brie.” Moxiemama- “Surprisingly good as it isn’t normally my varietal. A hint of apricot and melon and I like it.”
Mamacents- “Not as sweet as I anticipated given the blend. It has a kick to it and a great finish.”

Overall Mama Score = 3.5

Janus Pinot Noir 2004
Mamacork- “Delicious. Cedar & smoke. Blackberry and dark cherry. Kind of like a zin. Definitely a favorite.”
Mysterymama- “Berry, woody, smoky, then becomes pepper and spice. Stays on the tongue. Savor this one.”
Mamacents- “Too oaky for me. Initially very earthy and dry. As it opens it mellows a bit. I like more fruit.”
Ladycork- “My favorite- smoke and pepper. Kind of like I licked my favorite riding crop. It is delicious.”
Moxiemama- “Vibrant, enthusiastic, spicy and smoky. You can drink this dressed up or dressed down! Delicious.”

Overall Mama Score = 4.2 out of 5

Runaway Red Pinot Noir 2005
Mamacork- “A little too rough for me. It tastes like what it is, a blend of some kind.”
Mysterymama- “Drink it to drink it, not to eat dinner with.”
Mamacents- “I love blends the best. Still woody, but a lighter fruitier side. It warms my heart and is perfect for dinner with friends.”
Ladycork- “Earthy, berry. A bit too much going on here. Black cherry with a citrus finish? what? Surprising. Like your aunt popping out of your birthday cake.”
Moxiemama- “Ladies….I hate to inform you that this bottle is corked!?! …scores don’t count. Mamacents, what up with your palate?!?”
NOTE: As the astute Moxiemama noted, the bottle was in fact corked. Upon a repeat tasting, the mamas agreed that it is a delicious wine and we score it a 4.

Cheers!

Dutcher Crossing: June Shipment

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Our thoughts on the very first wine club shipment from Dutcher Crossing Winery:

Maple Vineyard Zinfandel 2005

Mamacork- “Jammy deliciousness. Smooth and peppery, but bright black cherry. This is a hearty Zin. Think filet mignon instead of lean cuisine.”

Mysterymama- “Smells like cedar & berries (’berries and cream; berries and cream…’ - for those in the know this is the most fabulous starbust commercial ever). Really, a nicely balanced zin with medium tannins and some heavy cedar.”

Mamatease- “Velvety at first taste. I thought it was a cab until the pepper kicked in. Very nice.”

Mamacents- “Wow, this is big. Big and smooth. I usually go for the old world varietals and though I like it, not my choice wine for the dinner party.”

Ladycork- “Fire up the bar-b and get ready to grill. Wood, cherry & spice…so nice! Perfect complement to that duck or pepper-crusted port loin you’ve been dying to serve. Invite one and all and dress to impress. With this at your table you are surely a success.”

Moxiemama- “This is a smooth, complex, sultry wine that starts and finishes with class. This is a bottle you don’t want to end. Picture it: you’re wearing your favorite black dress at a smoky jazz club…when you get up to use the loo, everyone watches you cross the room.
Song: Nina Simone- Sugar in My Bowl.”

Overall Mama Score = 4.5 out of 5

Taylor Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Mamacork- “Deep plum and spice; a classic cab with a touch of Syrah. This girl is duly impressed and I rate this wine very high!”

Mysterymama- “Big, smoky, cherry. It’s a big wine and needs a bit more time in the decanter. Fruity and smokey! I like a puzzle of contrasting flavors!”

Mamatease- “The BEST. Cabs Rock! Seriously, this is top of the heap and why bother with anything else!?!”

Mamacents- “Earthy, currant, cherry, berry, and a touch of leather. An excellent young Cab!”

Ladycork- “Interesting nose - hints of earth and berry. Chicory, currant, and berry. Finishes well. Odd. Like the eccentric uncle who becomes the belle of the ball.”

Moxiemama- “Good, full flavor but didn’t reach the bold heights that we were hoping for. Not quite sure what was missing….perhaps a few years in the bottle?!? Picture it: you’re sitting with your fiance’s parents at a formal dinner and wearing wool pants that fit you quite well…but are slightly itchy.
Song: Burt Bacharach- A House is Not a Home. “

Overall Mama Score = 3.9 out of 5

Cheers!
